Where is the sun?

94 Calves to date!!!!
We have had too many grey days. Today was a little sunny and slightly warmer, tomorrow is supposed to be very nice and sunny...H-72f!!!!!! Next week they are calling for temps in the mid 80's! I cannot wait! Winter has seemed particularly longer this year, even though it has been milder than the last couple ones we had. We didn't really get much snow, and except for the major ice storm we got, it wasn't bad. Just seems like 5 months of overcast days to me.
With that said, the last two weeks have been pretty blah for me.
I've got about 50 soaps made so far for the craft show.
Lovely (Sara Jessica Parker Type), Golden Goddess, Stress Relief (BBW), Imagine :love type, simply goat milk soap with Tea Tree oil for problem skin, an antidepressant soap, (both made with essential oils) just to name a few!
I've got several men's fragrances I'm making tomorrow - Dolce & Gabanna for men, cool water for men, Polo blue to name a few. I still have many more to make, and then the tedious job of listing them all in my shops.
I tried to leave comments yesterday, and today. I was able to leave a few...but not all.
Two in particular at this time I want to leave for friends. Liz - I'm so terribly sorry about Yowie! how heartbroken you and the girls must be! Love you all and big hugs!
Kacy - again...keep your chin up...remember to breathe and smile!
I have many more things to say to everyone but super is needing to be made, so I'll post again later.....
Take it easy all!
Love -Rae

Easter Basket Surprise...which brings me to an egg question!

Yeah stormy again! Our Kentucky weather is crazy in the spring. I love watching the storms roll in though. We even had some hail with this storm. My boys didn't like this storm at all, my poor horses apparently didn't have enough brains today to go to the barn when it began to hail and just stood their with their rumps to the storm taking a beating! That's okay I have brain farts like that too at times!
I got a pleasant surprise this weekend...Pepper came home...or was she here the whole time? Probably the latter and I'm just not a good chicken hunter! I found her roosting on top of the hay bales but back in a little hidden hole, all fluffed up and maternal like. She scolded me harshly when I scooped her up to place her in the coop. This is why...
Yep.....10, count em' 10 eggs she was sitting on. I imagine she's been mostly sitting on her bundle of eggs and hasn't come down to eat much. So now for my egg question....The oldest egg in this stash is as least 10 days old. So how old is too old to keep and how does one tell if an egg is bad?
I spent the morning with Mari. We rode to PT together, which today was wonderful on my back! Then to lunch and Michael's. I think I can say this is the first time I've been to Michael's and haven't bought any art supplies! In fact I resisted the urge to even go into the art isle! *patting self on back*
Nice morning.
Douglas got his allowance for last year...yep I pay him either every 6 months to a year so that he saves his money and doesn't waste it on piddly stuff (which he will do, he thinks if he has a nickle he has to spend it.)
With what he was saving I bought him an air rifle. Its slightly stronger than a BB gun...but still safe enough for him to use. He was in Heaven! He has missed shooting the invading species that are not indigenous to Kentucky. So needless to say, he hasn't come in doors until its bedtime since he got his gun.
I'm visiting my friend Michelle who has recently had some major health problems and going to sit and visit with her tomorrow. It will be nice to just visit and be of some assistance if she needs it. I have to say again that she is such a remarkable woman. She sent out and email to all her friends wishing them Happy Easter, and her attitude of thankfulness amazed me as she spoke of her joy of Gods love and precious gift he gave us all. Her hopes and spirits are high.
No new calves in the last several days...we still have about 56 cows to calve yet. We are almost out of silage now. The herd of 74 is getting the last of the silage every other day. The other herd of 36 is off the silage. All the pastures have grass growing now, and to avoid grass tetnie they are given minerals. That green spring grass can kill them without the proper amount of mineral. If anyone is wanting to know what kind of mineral they are given to avoid that and when it should be given just let me know.
I'm looking for some new kittens for the farm to rid the barn here at the house of mice and rats. I haven't seen any rats yet but I'm sure they will end up there too if I don't do something now. The mice have a whole community moving in...they gotta go. Having Sam live in the barn for 2 years kept the mice population to zilch! (Sam came up missing several months ago after a week of coyote activity.....) So it's time to refill the barn with some playful kitties!
My kitchen still smells so good after making soap and lotion bars yesterday! I finally got in my new fragrance and essential oils in......so I've begun to prepare for the craft show on the 5th.
I've neglected my soap blog and need to do some updating on there as well....maybe tomorrow.
I also need to post in my personal blog...maybe tomorrow too.
I'm off to visit some blogs now and catch up...hope everyone had a wonderful Easter!

~*~In Motion~*~ First Steps, video at the end!...and a supper date! (foal care to date at the end)

Another 8 hours and getting stronger with each moment! (I'm sure there will be tons of misspellings spell check isnt working and I type faster than my brain works some times so I apologize ahead of time)
I have had the camera ready at all times since Radish has been born...though I think I need to recharge my batteries! I was so happy to be able to catch his first steps! Look at him! He's standing! He is increasing his milk intake and staying awake for much longer periods of time now!
Here he is taking a rest from standing for about 10 minutes total! WOW!
I picked up a halter for a foal.....LOL ummm he's got some growing to do before he fits into it! This gives you an idea just how small he is! He didn't know he could hold his head up with this thing on! LOL
This is his new "room" for the time being. Now that he is getting up and atempting to walk, we had to build him a corral so that my carpet doesnt get nasty. Norm built it for me in no time and put it on top of the thick plastic we have been keeping under him. Norm did such an awesome job and I'm still amazed that he has allowed our newest member of the family indoors. I know he knows how much this little foal means to me and the kids, especially Leah. And Norm likes his Sire - Buck- so much too I think he likes having one of his babies here on the farm. I think its cool! I cant tell him enough how I love what he's done for me and this baby the last few days! What a prize I have in him, huh ladies??
He's just too cute not just post tons of pictures.....today Gin came and babysat for me so that I could go to town with Mari and talk to a gentleman about advertising my "business". I put that in quotes because I only WISH I had a business.....right now more like a hobby. He got my card for my soaps from somewhere and liked my website and wanted to talk to me about advertising online and in the Yellow Book.....I wish I was at that level with my soaps. But I'm not, if I was making enough from my soaps to warrant an advertisement, hey it would be great and affordable....but at this point selling on Etsy and Artfire, whom both put you in google searches, is good for me. The best part was eating supper at Panera Bread with my favorite friend Mari
I always enjoy spending time with Mari, she always gives me good sound advice and listens to me even when I'm telling her crazy stories of my growing up. I am a talker and all over the place when I get going! LOL Poor Mari....I'm sure she wants some ear plugs at times! lol She and Gin are Radish's adpotive Grandma's. I feel like I could talk to Mari about anything and I know she'll keep my secrets and tell me "like it is" when I need to be told "how it is"! I love her for that, and for her giving heart. Over the last year she has become someone very dear to me.
It was nice to get out of the house for a couple of hours and not worry about the baby. It's been stressful the first 2 days, no sleep, worrying about if I'm doing all this right or not, and the basic care of a foal. There is A LOT to it, and if it can be avoided, its always best to let nature take care of its own. However this isnt a perfect world and sometimes without human intervention things don't always go so well. Most of the time we dont have to interfere, but there are times we do. I would have loved it if Radish and his momma had been able to take care of themselves. The chances of an orphaned foal making it without all the nutritional needs it has to get from its mother, are really pretty thin..but definately do-able. With a Preemie the chances of a foal making it are not as high. Which is why I have worried so much over this baby. I cant loose him, knowing how much Leah and myself were looking forward to his birth. Leah lost a colt at her dads awhile back and was heartbroken...I cant have that happen to her again. It's a whole lot of work, its constant 24/7, but like I stated in my post this morning, worth every muscle ache, lost sleep, and worry. We are over the most critical time, now to just make it to the 2 week mark....then I'll feel more confident about his survival. It could go either way still....I cant make up for not having his real momma in every way. But I'm persistant about my babies born here on the farm, and I have that refusal to let any of them die. Animals have always been a passion of mine, and I'm thankful every day that I wake up and get the chance to work with animals. It brings such a contented joy to my life that I cannot describe in words! It makes me smile from ear to ear! What I have learned the last 56 hours are that you can read everything and anything online about saving an animal....but the advice from those who have been there is invaluable, and that every animal is different. There is no "text book" case..there will always be something that you have to do different, and feel your way through to find what works. I'm lucky to have friends who have real life knowledge and life saving advice. again......I have to thank you all for holding my hand through the last 3 days!
I love you all!
I hope you'll enjoy the movie of his very first steps! Dont mind the wreck called my living room in the background....I have paper towels, towels, laundry baskets of blankets, garbage bags, etc...that arent normaly laying around like that! Words of Wisdom...if there is a horse in your house..it will not remain spotless! LOL Oh..and build a corral! Enjoy the movie! I hope I uploaded it right!

Foal Care to date>

Fed colostrum in 2 seperate feedings within 6 - 8 hours after birth. Could not milk Georgia (mom) for her colostrum.

Tetnus and antibiotic shots given at birth, and enema (by Vet)

moved into the house away from drafts and cold, foals are born with no fat reserves and preemies can die quickly if left in the elements. - Getting chilled is one of the main causes of death in preemie foals, along with no colostrum.

Foal doesnt have good head control, or lip control, learning still to suck, must make the nipple stay in his mouth and cup the nipple and his mouth in order to create suction for him. Have to hold foals head up and keep him awake to feed..the sucking reflex also causes a secure feeling like a human baby and puts him to sleep.

days 1 -2 1 1/2 cups of milk replacer ( NO COWS MILK - can feed a foal goats milk) every hour ..thats 24 feedings day..and night. Slept a lot, restless sleeps...had a hunch not getting enough food..requirements on milk replacer are not working for this foal....made hole in lambs nipple larger....fed better and slept more soundly. Milk Replacer instructions say to feed 3 cups every 3 hours...not so with a preemie...he needs more feedings at smaller intervals. Foal is being roated so that he doesnt lay on just one side, or he will get pnemonia..and also must be fed sitting up, this requires you to litteraly hold the newborn up to feed.

Day 3 eating 2 cups a feeding every 1 1/2 to 2 hours. 16 feedings a day. Now begining to stand on his own, and takes his first steps at 48 hours old. With a normal birth..the foal stands and walks, and sucks within 1 - 2 hours. He sleeps more soundly...yet awake more through out the day, constantly trying to stand. He still has no interest really about his surroundings....will track my voice and "nicker" to greet me when he see's me...thats also how he tells me he is hungry. He has neighed 2 times now...the first was Tuesday night when Levi whom was on the porch by the back door right where Radish is laid began doing his "get out of my yard" bark at the coyotees....he neighed very loudly as if Levi's barking alarmed him..it was cute really!

At 48 hours old he now sleeps mostly sitting up rather than laying flat on his side. Is drinking almost 3 full cups a feeding every 2 to 2 1/2 hours - approximately still 16 feedings in a 24 hour period. He has begun to fill out. His legs are now getting straighter and stronger, still not walking on his hooves....they will straighten in time. They finally are starting to look like a "real horse leg". He has control over his lips, his bottom lip no longer hangs there, he can hold his head up steadily, but still have to help prop his head while he eats..still wants to fall asleep toward the end of his bottle. All bottles and nipples must be kept very clean and sterile, and cannot mix with cows milk. He is now standing for a few minutes and attempts to walk taking 6 steps before falling.

At 56 hours old....stood for approximately 10 minutes on his own! And praying that I'll get even more sleep tonight!

Friday Farm Update

This week has been a busy one here on the farm.
Torro is coming a long nicely, healthy, and very active little bugger!
Georgia is getting closer to her due date! I'm very excited to experience the birth of a foal for the first time! I have come to grow on Georgia! She now knows that I am the bearer of good food, and she greets me with a friendly rolling snort! Get this! She even let me rub on her the other day! Woo hoo! Trust me that is progress.
Pepper is back to laying...but I wonder why everyone elses chickens lay more than 1 egg a day??? Is my Pepper defective?
Doug went to feed Torro yesterday afternoon and came running back to tell me there was a hawk in the barn...Oh no! Pepper! She was out all day! I ran down to find a Red tail Hawk finishing a meal of pigeon! Whew, pepper dodged the bullet! No more free ranging for her for awhile, now that the hawk knows there is a plentiful supply of pigeons, he'll be back again for an easy meal.
The bathroom that we have had renovated (new tile) is completed. We ended up having to get more linoleum but I really like the floor. Do you know how it is when you have a plan in your mind and its not done the way you want? Well the bath kinda ended up that way. The faucet in the tub is NOT what I picked out. For whatever reason they had to get another one, and i told them to get one like I had...same style...very country. They came back and put up a very modern faucet. Not at all what I wanted. Too late for me to say something.
I have a tile stripe running along the wall that I picked out..white beaded thin strip...I wanted it 3 tiles down from the end cap so that it would flow seamlessly along the wall, without the window or light switch breaking it up...both of these things were told to them several times, before I could say anything again....the stripe is only 1 tile down, with the window and light switch breaking it up...and to top it off the tile is not level in some places. *sigh*
And there is more...I wanted to keep the ceiling smooth, told this as well a few times....it was textured before I even got back from taking Douglas to school!
The bad thing is...My uncle, cousin, and my uncles brother who remodel and build homes are the ones we contracted to do the bathroom and our hardwood floors. What do you do? Basically my uncle did it the way HE wanted rather than what I asked for. Bummed about that, because my vision for the bath is not carried through. I'll post a picture later....too upset to even walk in there right now. The white tile I picked out really brightened the room and made the bath look bigger...hey! A bright spot.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Cow and calf count on the hill is off...another baby was born yesterday which should make 8 calves, and only 7 has been counted for 2 days. This is not unusual, momma usually hides them away for 3 or 4 days before she brings him or her out to be with the rest of the herd.
Hopefully today we will get an accurate count.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Douglas is with his dad this weekend and Norm and I are celebrating my good health report and the fact that I can no longer worry about my cancer, with our good friends Donnie and Michele. I'm hoping to get our other friends and neighbors too, Dennis and Mari to go with us, but I havent been able to talk to Mari yet.
I'm supposed to go to Mari's to take some pictures for our Etsy teams March giveaway.
I'll post the link and instructions to win! It begins March 1st! Yea!
So this morning I've been busy making soap again! I LOVE IT! I also got an order last night, just 36 hours after I re-opened my Etsy shop. I had it closed since the ice storm. I've listed new items too, so come check it out.
I'll be getting some more on there tomorrow...some great body butter...Victoria Secrets - VERY SEXY! YUUUUMMMM is all I can say!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
I got a wonderful surprise yesterday!!! Kacy gave me a call on the tele! We have become friends through blogger world and it was so great to "meet" in person! Unfortunately she lives in Oregon...so far away! Why is it that my friends have to be so far away!!!!! Bummer! I do plan one day to get out and meet everyone "proper-like"! I sure NEED to win the lottery so I can do all I plan in life! Kacy it was awesome to talk to you! I hope you get that blog issue worked out, and to get to mine its on my side bar...I NEED to write in it! I also hope that you get those issues we talked about cleared up and over with!
Cathy! Your so close, no reason not to come down and meet up! We'll celebrate our benchmarks with cancer like you said! We are both survivors and should be celebrated! YEA us! So let me know, I'm up for getting together!
Libby Dear - your so great! Leah is home next weekend...Indian??? Can you do that?
Let me know! I am excited to see you again! Hopefully I can meet the boys too!
Did I tell you that I love the dreads????
OOOOH just got an email I made another sell on Etsy! YEA...I get to make more soap! Tomorrow!
I had better jump off here, I gotta get cleaned up, I'm supposed to go to Mari's and take some picks of my giveaway items and email them to the team.
Like I said I'll let you know when its up, the link, and what to do!
I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Can Horses Eat Bananas?

Seriously! Can horses eat banaynays? (not a spelling error Ba-nay-nay's) What can horses NOT eat? Finding this info on the web really turned into a chore that saw no end in sight, so therefor asking my horse lovin friends! HELP!
No farm picture today, too cold and I just didn't feel like getting out, well I did - we fed this morning and saw about 50 turkey and had an excellent photo op, but didn't have my camera...figures. So you get my boy, Levi. He is a doll, finally learned to stay ( he's a year and half) slow learner, course that is the hardest for a dog to learn. Bo (my maine coon cat) knows what it means and keeps telling me the dog is just stupid....sometimes I tend to agree. You know its been a long time since I've posted anything about Bo...hmmm lets see...for having a stroke about 5 or 6 months ago...he is doing exceptional! He is about 98% his old self! I didn't think I'd see this day. I havent weighed him to see if he has gained any more weight, he feels like it and I can no longer feel his spine...will do that tonight and see if he has progressed since his last weigh in.
Jack update....I've been working with the little bugger a lot, he now lifts his front hooves and lets them be cleaned, he now tolerates his belly being rubbed and even patted! He is not spooking at movement or touch any longer, and loves me when he see's his food bucket, for a moment I am his best friend!
Pepper is mad at me today because I didnt let her out of the coop, with bad weather coming in i didnt want to have to find her, or end up with frozen chicken.
King....improving every day, I'm loving watching his 'awakening' to this world!
Cows are ready to pop! Bags are swelling and we'll have calves any time..watch..tonight or tomorrow we'll have them begin to come - worst weather of the year!
Norm is improving but is pretty achy at the end of the day. He has been fixing the silage wagon, that needed to be fixed 5 weeks ago, but the fella that was going to come out to fix it ( and talk to me about selling me some goats) has not shown, and we are at a critical time and need to feed the silage. Hay supply is short this year, and cows are not looking as good as they should.
Douglas made a 95% on his Science test! Which is something he should have been doing all along and then wouldnt have gotten his two bad grades on his report card.
Here is what we are expecting weather wise-
DAY ONE...TONIGHT.A WINTER STORM WARNING IS IN EFFECT OVERNIGHT FOR SIGNIFICANT SNOW AND SLEET ACCUMULATIONS. I know you dont want to read all that, but there it is anyway!
LOL
And to boot...we need to go to the grocery cause we have been putting it off for a couple weeks...so now I'm forced to go. I hate going to the grocery.
I want a few of my blogger buddies to know that I'm praying for them and their families...you know who you are and your needs, not gonna place your business here, but just want you to know that your on my prayer list!
I'm so far behind on everything to do with soap! I have so many soaps to list and my etsy shop has been ignored for weeks now....hopefully the weather wont be too bad tomorrow so I can go to Mari's and list my products in my shops.
Crossing my fingers Mari!
I know there was a lot more I wanted to talk about...however...due to getting older, my mind cannot recall what it was that I wanted to blab about.....fact of life, and one I'm fighting every day...I will not grow old without a fight!
So until I remember what it was I wanted to blog about...I reckon I'll go!
Wishing you all good weather over the next few days!
Luv
